Dear Premier Cook and Minister Whitby
Congratulations to you and the WA Government on partnering with Malgana Traditional Owners on the creation of new national parks and reserves in the World Heritage area of Gathaagudu (Shark Bay) in WA's Gascoyne region.
This announcement is an exciting milestone towards the delivery of the government’s historic Plan for Our Parks commitment, which is adding 5 million hectares to WA's conservation estate.
These new parks mark a historic moment for Malgana people, Malgana Aboriginal Corporation and the Cook Government, to ensure the protection of WA’s World Heritage-listed Gathaagudu (Shark Bay).
You have my strong support for this conservation achievement as these national parks and reserves will preserve Malgana culture and will provide protection for the incredible landscapes and biodiversity of the iconic Shark Bay region, including some of WA's threatened animals like the Shark Bay mouse, western barred bandicoot and burrowing bettong.
These new parks will support Malgana Aboriginal Corporation and Malgana Traditional Owners to protect and manage their Country, while creating jobs and economic development through nature-based tourism and Aboriginal ranger positions.
I look forward to welcoming more national parks and marine parks under Plan for Our Parks throughout 2024 and urge you to continue to create protected areas across WA in partnership with Traditional Owners.
Once again, I congratulate you, the WA Government, Malgana Aboriginal Corporation and Malgana Traditional Owners on this announcement and the long-lasting opportunities it will create for people and nature in WA.
Yours sincerely,
