Send a message of congratulations to Nyamal Traditional Owners and the WA Government for this historic announcement!

Dear Premier Cook and Minister Whitby

Congratulations to you and the WA Government on partnering with Nyamal Traditional Owners on the creation of new national parks and reserves on Nyamal Country.

This announcement is an exciting milestone towards the delivery of the government’s historic Plan for Our Parks commitment, which aims to add 5 million hectares of new protected areas to WA's conservation estate.

These new national parks mark a historic moment for Nyamal Traditional Owners, Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation and the Cook Government, to ensure the protection of more of WA's amazing biodiversity.

You have my strong support for this conservation achievement as these national parks will help preserve Nyamal culture and will provide protection for the incredible landscapes and biodiversity of the iconic Pilbara region, including plants and animals found nowhere else like the Pilbara olive python, Pilbara leaf-nosed bat and the iconic bilby.

This new national park will support the Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation and Nyamal Traditional Owners to protect and manage their Country, while creating jobs and economic development through nature-based tourism and the creation of additional Aboriginal ranger jobs that will have long-lasting benefits for people and nature.

I look forward to welcoming more national parks and marine parks under Plan for Our Parks throughout 2024 and urge you to continue to create protected areas across WA in partnership with Traditional Owners.

Once again, I congratulate you, the WA Government, Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation and Nyamal Traditional Owners on this announcement and the opportunities it will create for people and nature in WA.

    Yours sincerely,

The Pilbara has a new national park on Nyamal Country!

New jointly-managed protected areas, Purungunya National Park and Purungunya Conservation Park, will protect more than 200,000 hectares of Nyamal Country in the Pilbara.

The area is found in one of WA's eight biodiversity hotspots and is home to 91 threatened species including the Pilbara olive python, Pilbara leaf-nosed bat and the iconic bilby.

The new parks will support Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation and Nyamal Traditional Owners to protect and manage their Country, while creating jobs and economic development through nature-based tourism and by creating more Aboriginal ranger positions.

Congratulations to Nyamal Traditional Owners, Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation and the WA Government for this significant step forward for protecting more of WA's nature for future generations!
