New national parks and nature reserves have been declared in WA’s Gascoyne and Murchison regions on Wajarri Country — protecting 816,000 hectares of WA’s amazing nature and culture.
The Burringurrah (Mount Augustus), Muggon and Dalgaranga national parks and Lakeside Conservation Park will cover an area one-third the size of Sicily or 3.5 times the size of the ACT and will help protect more of WA's incredible Wildflower Country and other important areas in Wajarri Country.
The parks on Wajarri Country will see more protection for 26 threatened species such as the brush-tailed mulgara, vulnerable malleefowl, long-tailed dunnart and the rare Mount Augustus foxglove.
These new national parks and reserves will support Wajarri Yamaji Aboriginal Corporation and Wajarri Traditional Owners to protect and manage their Country, while creating jobs and economic development through tourism and by creating more Aboriginal ranger positions.
Congratulations to Wajarri Traditional Owners, Wajarri Yamaji Aboriginal Corporation and the WA Government for this significant step forward for protecting more of WA's nature for future generations!
